Batik Making for Children and Families
Join us for a family workshop session at The Orchard in Patten, Maine to learn about the art of batik. Batik is a delicate method of dyeing fabric using a removable wax resist. Hot wax is applied to fabric using batik stamps and brushes or other tools. The fabric and wax are then painted. After drying, the wax is removed in a boiling water bath, revealing a pattern on the fabric. You will learn the process of making batik, from applying liquid hot wax with various tools, applying dyes, and setting color. Explore storytelling using patterns and marks or simply create a beautiful work of art to keep and treasure.

Heart Song: Journeys in Bookmaking (Six week bookmaking workshop series September 18, 25, October 2, 9, 16, & 23, 2024, 5:00-8:00 PM)
In this six week bookmaking journey we will gather together, connect and share inspiration. You will create a stunning artist book simply made of fabrics and papers. All of our creations will be held together between old book covers allowing for a variety of display possibilities. We will add to this book throughout our time together with paint, stitch, drawing and mark making, found and treasured personal objects, photographs, collage, writing and more. I will teach you how to incorporate found objects, layers, and textures into memorable and unique artist books. Learning simple textile dyeing and printmaking processes, we will experiment and explore mixed media. Finally, we will bind our creations together using natural elements or stitching techniques.

Bound Mixed Media Book Arts
This two-part workshop series is all about gathering, making, collaging, painting, mark making and bookbinding binding. Mixed media processes and prompts will be introduced and used to create what only we can put together. Our own creative ways will shine in one of a kind book arts creations that make us feel fully alive and well, as art making always does.
